Bullaun stone in Gormanstown

On the grounds of the 'Model Farm' house. According to OS Namebook the stone formerly lay beside the gable of an adjacent church (TS087-019----) (O'Donovan 1840). The boulder (diam. 0.6m x 0.5m; D 0.34m), sandstone with quartz inclusions, has a circular depression (diam. 0.3m) which narrows as it deepens and perforates the base of the stone. Likely dating to the early Christian period, the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual purposes, such as the preparation of holy water or as a baptismal font.
