Situated at the crest of an E-facing slope within a trivallate enclosure (see WA027-003010-) which Power (1952, 215) suggested as 'the site of an early church' and who also recorded that a 'bullán of ancient type was removed from the site about 50 years ago [i.e. c. 1900].'. Likely dating to the early Christian period, the bullaun stone was probably used for ritual purification or as a holy water font associated with a nearby ecclesiastical site. Such stones are often linked to local saints and may have had both religious and folkloric significance.
