Bullaun stone in Ballintombay Lower

Granite boulder (L 1.3m; Wth 1.14m; T 0.56m) with three basins (diam. 0.24-0.32m; D 0.08-0.16m) in the upper surface. Known locally as 'the Wart Stone'. (Crawford 1912, 340; Price 1959, 164, no. 10) This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 125/1940). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Likely dating to the Early Christian or later prehistoric period, bullaun stones were often used for ritual or practical purposes such as preparing holy water or grinding herbs. Local folklore may associate the stone with healing, particularly for skin ailments, given its name 'the Wart Stone'.
