Bullaun stone in Annagh (coolavin By.)

Within a graveyard (SL046-026002-), located on a penitential station (MA046-026002-), named ‘Altar’ on the OS 6-inch maps. According to local information, a roughly circular stone (diam. approx. 0.4m) with a central circular hollow was traditionally kept on top of the penitential station. It may have been a bullaun stone, or possibly a stoup or font. Unusually, it had a lid or cap, which consisted of a smaller stone, hemispherical in shape, the flat side of which was placed over the central hollow of the large stone. Probably dating to the early Christian period, the bullaun stone was likely used for ritual purification or as an altar. Such stones are often associated with penitential sites and may have had both Christian and prehistoric spiritual significance.
