A bullaun stone is indicated on the 1920 OS 6-inch map at ITM 569762, 685337 on Inis Cealtra. It is described by Macalister (1916-17, 143) as a stone (2ft 7in [0.78m] by 1ft 9in [0.53m] by 1ft 5in [0.43m]) with an oval depression (1ft 5in [0.43m] by 1ft [0.3m]; D 5in [0.12m]) ‘towards the north shore of the island’. On inspection on 21 July 2015 the area was found to be very overgrown and the bullaun stone was not located. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 29 September 2015

Likely dating to the early Christian period, the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual purposes, such as anvil stones for blessing holy water or as part of monastic activity. Local tradition may associate it with saintly figures or healing practices linked to the island’s holy site.
