Browns Mill (Corn)

Roadside, at head of Oyster Haven, and 1.8km NE of Kinsale. Rectangular corn mill (int.: 13.63m E-W; 5.24m N-S); 4-storeys with attic, gable-ended. Wheel-pit (Wth 2.2m; D c. 3m) along E gable, head race substantially higher(c. 3m) than ground level indicating wheel-pit housed high breastshot or overshot waterwheel which no longer survives. Underground arched tail race. Mill machinery powered by a line shaft of pulleys. Early 20th century grinding machines on ground floor: Blackstone Mill fitted with 30in french burr stones; Bentall Grinding Mill. On 1st floor there is a Huntley, Cronson and Hammond Separator. Other mill equipment includes hoppers,chutes, cupped elevator and sack hoist. Long 2-storey structure (long axisN-S) added to W end of N elevation incorporates a grain drying kiln (int.: 16.15m E-W; 3.18m N-S) at S end. Central furnace (1.77m x 1.39m) at groundfloor with ceramic grain drying kiln tiles at 1st floor. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
