Bristol Castle was founded in the 11th century by the Norman lord Robert Fitzhamon and served as a key stronghold in the early medieval period. It played a strategic role in controlling the River Avon and the growing settlement of Bristol, though much of the castle was later demolished, leaving only fragments visible today.
