Brian Merriman was a Clare farmer and hedge teacher who imagined a midnight court where frustrated women sued men for refusing marriage. He died in 1805, yet his reckless parody of fairy justice and human cowardice still outranks most serious poetry. The Midnight Court remains a laughing warning that love is not a trick and imagination is not an escape from responsibility.
