Branscombe West Cliff consists mainly of Cretaceous-age limestone and sandstone, formed around 145 to 66 million years ago through the accumulation of marine sediments. The cliff is notable for its exposure of the Branscombe Mudstone Formation, which provides important insights into the geological history of the Jurassic-Cretaceous transition in southern England.
