Boulder-burial in Keamore

Boulder-burial

What is recorded here

Keamore holds a flat-topped slab spanning two and a half metres above three hidden support stones, overlooking Ballin Lough. The chamber waited beneath pasture while people came and went, perhaps sealing bodies or hiding tools from rain. Its size suggests confident hands and a clear purpose, even if the names are lost. The lake still reflects the slope where that chamber was built.
In pasture, on N-facing slope overlooking Ballin Lough. Sub-rectangular flat-topped slab (2.55m x 1.55m; 0.6m T) resting above three support stones. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Boulder-burial in Keamore is a Bronze Age funerary monument, likely dating to the early to middle first millennium BCE. Its construction reflects a regional tradition of single-chamber stone burials, significant for understanding local mortuary practices and social organisation in west Ireland.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
