Oxford's Bodleian Library can make even a noisy explorer lower his voice before anyone says a word. Cross the Old Library's Schools Quadrangle and the stonework starts its lecture; step into the Divinity School and its carved ceiling offers a second one, with absolutely no mercy for an underprepared neck. I came to see books and nearly failed the architecture exam. Sir Thomas Bodley's library opened to readers in 1602, building on Oxford's older university collection. The Divinity School itself was built in the fifteenth century as a place of teaching and examinations. Duke Humfrey's Library remains the oldest reading room in the Bodleian, with its historic shelves and painted ceiling. None of these rooms is a stage set: the university still uses the library for study and research. Visitors can walk around the Old Library courtyard when its gates are open. The Divinity School has its own visiting arrangements, while entry to Duke Humfrey's working library is through an official guided tour. A longer tour also takes in Convocation House and Chancellor's Court. Resist the urge to whisper a fake medieval password at a door; the staff have a much better system, involving tickets and knowing where everyone should be. Choose the tour that covers the rooms you most want to see and check current availability with the Bodleian before you travel. Look up at the Divinity School's vault, then notice how the library's quieter spaces put centuries of learning to work. The pleasure here is not pretending to own the books. It is getting close enough to see why people kept them.

Why it was built

Oxford built the first library above the Divinity School in the fifteenth century, and Thomas Bodley restored and enlarged it from 1598.

People and work

Bodley, librarians, scholars and many donors built collections that drew readers from across the world.

How it changed

New wings, underground stores and nearby library buildings answered constant growth while old rooms remained at the centre of the service.

What survives

Duke Humfrey's Library, the old quadrangle, reading rooms, book stacks and links to later buildings survive in use.

Why it mattered

It matters because centuries of collecting and public scholarship are held together in buildings made continuously useful rather than frozen in time.
