Read the whole record
Blaenllynfi Castle was probably founded between 1208 and 1215 and repeatedly changed hands during the struggles of the thirteenth century. Later rebuilding could not restore its former power; walls, towers and a moat now outline a substantial stone enclosure whose ground still holds evidence of the contested borderland.
Who built and held it
The founder is not securely known, but the first castle belongs to the years between 1208 and 1215. Its broad stone enclosure and towers show that it became more than a temporary earthwork.
Attack, change and use
Blaenllynfi was captured several times through the thirteenth century and suffered damage that pushed it towards ruin. A restoration or rebuilding followed around the middle of the fourteenth century, although it never recovered as a major residence.
What survives
Walls, buttresses and tower bases define a four-sided castle on a moated platform about 78 by 56 metres. Earthworks continue beyond the moat, and private excavation beginning in 1973 exposed further evidence of the plan.
Why it mattered
The damaged and rebuilt enclosure records repeated changes of control in southern Powys. Its surviving moat and buried structures can reveal how a substantial border castle was altered after warfare rather than simply abandoned after one event.
