Blackburnrig rises to approximately 300 metres and is part of the rugged upland landscape of the Scottish Borders. Its name suggests a historical or territorial boundary feature, common in the region's medieval landscape. The area is geologically characterised by Carboniferous rocks, typical of Southern Scotland.
