The earliest record of a bridge over the river Dodder at Rathfarnham is 1381 A. D. (Ball 1903, 116, 126, 143; Mac Giolla -Phadraig 1954, 21-22). Several subsequent wooden bridges had been swept away at this crossing until 1765 when a single arch, stone bridge was built. This survived until 1953 when the present bridge was built (Mac Giolla-Phadraig 1954, 21-22).
