Berbice

Shipwreck

What is recorded here

Berbice is a four-mast rigger lost off County Antrim in 1827, her timbers scattered across five metres of dark water. She struck the bottom with enough violence to break her own bones, sending decks and spars drifting into the foam. What remains is not a clean hull but a field of wood, rope and iron, still tangled in the motion of her death.
The official Northern Ireland wreck record identifies Berbice as 4 mast rigger. It was lost in 1827. Recorded depth: 5m. Recorded condition: Scattered wreckage.
