Beaufort Castle has stood on the same Highland bank since Alexander I, enduring Cromwell's gunpowder and Cumberland's flames until the twelfth house rose in 1885 for the Frasers of Lovat. A lone surviving wall from the fourteenth-century stronghold still juts through the gardens, witnessing the repeated destruction and stubborn return of the family who called the river theirs.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Beaufort Castle as Castle (medieval) - (post Medieval), Chapel (medieval) - (post Medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Beaufort Castle was built by the de Vesci family in the 12th century and later held by the powerful Douglas family in the 14th century. It is remembered for its strategic importance in the Scottish Wars of Independence and for the tragic massacre of the Douglas family there in 1306.
