What is recorded here

Beaufort Castle occupies a violent Highland memory where twelve structures rose and fell before the current house appeared in 1885. Cromwell blew it up, Cumberland burned it after Culloden, and the Frasers of Lovat kept returning to the same dangerous ground. The old defence ditch still marks the east side, while gardening has buried the western scars.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Beaufort Castle as Cropmark(s) (modern), Enclosure (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Beaufort Castle was built by the de Vesci family in the 12th century and later held by the powerful Douglas family in the 14th century. It is remembered for its strategic importance in the Scottish Borders during the Wars of Scottish Independence.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
