What is recorded here
Beacon Hill Fort, located in Tendring, England, was built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to defend the port of Harwich. Originally a site for three blockhouses was used during Henry VIII's reign, but only one, House-upon-the-Hill, survived until the Napoleonic Wars when an earthen battery was constructed. In 1887, a new artillery battery was built with innovative design features and powerful armament, which underwent several upgrades throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During World War I, it served as a destroyer base and was further modernized. Decommissioned in 1956, parts of the fort were restored in 2018.
