Bawn in Williamstown (briscoe)

Situated on a low rise overlooking low-lying poorly drained grassland to the W, Williamstown House 55m to SSE. Williamstown Castle (WM013-060----) is depicted as a small rectangular-shaped structure on the 1837 OS 6-inch map and annotated as ‘Castle (Site of)' on revised 1911 ed. OS 6-inch map. No surface remains visible of levelled castle which appears to have stood in the S quadrant of a large rectangular-shaped area (approx. dims. 80m N-S; 47m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank and external fosse. Low stony rises inside bawn possibly represents the remains of a range of buildings, although no definite wall footings are evident are visible at the W side of the bawn. It is possible that some of these stony rises could be natural rock outcropping. Outline of bawn clearly visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011.
