No bawn is visible near Clocully Castle, yet the island 250 m southwest may still hold the wall, houses and orchard described in 1654. The River Sewer probably passed it then, as water still moves through that part of County Tipperary. Edmond Butler and his father Thomas may have lived inside the bawn while ordinary people used its cabbins and ate from its trees.

The Civil Survey (1654-5) refers to 'two thatcht houses with chemnyes and a Bawne about them, some cabbins and an orchard. The River Sewer runeth by the sd lands' in the 'colpe of Cloghcully' under the proprietorship of 'Edmond Butler of Cloghcully Esqr & his ffather Thomas Lord Barron of Cahyr Irish Papists' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 342). There is no visible trace of the bawn above ground in the vicinity of the former Cloghcully Castle (TS088-021001-). The exact location of the bawn is unknown, though the reference probably relates to the bawn (TS088-023001-) on the island 250m SW of Clocully Castle.
