Bawn in Clare Beg is a ruined walled enclosure on a low island in the River Anner, County Tipperary, where two houses still sit inside a broken circle of stone. One short length of wall survives between their southwest corners, while the rest has sunk into grass, water memory or forgotten earth. The place may have been a household, a trap or a small kingdom, but its boundary is gone except where the river still repeats it.

On low-lying flat island in the River Anner. The castle/house (TS070-083001-;TS070-083003-) and bawn with house (TS070-083005-) at the W angle is built on a raised earthwork defined by scarp (H 0.62m) with a berm (Wth 7.5m; 11.55m) beyond the bawn to the SW and beyond the smaller house to the NW respectively. On the 2nd (1903-04) ed. 6-inch OS map the northern and eastern edges of the bawn (dims. 40m NE-SW; 46m NW-SE), which extend N and E of the buildings, are defined by a bank which is now not visible above ground. Only one length of bawn wall survives, connecting the SW gable of the fortified house with the SW gable of the house 14.5m to the NW in the W angle of the bawn. The bawn appears to have been tied into the W end of the NW wall of the fortified house but does not look original, possibly as this bawn wall is contemporary with the 17th century rebuilding of the original castle. This length of bawn wall continues from the fortified house for 7.5m, mostly only the lower courses survive. On the S end of the SE wall of the smaller house tie stones for the bawn project out up to the top of the first-floor, though the bawn itself does not survive at this point. A wall projects out from the E end of the NE wall of the fortified house, up to first-floor level, however, this is a later wall abutting the fortified house and appears to be contemporary with 18th-century modifications to the building.
