Castle Island in County Mayo holds a bawn wall beside a tower house, shaping a small defended place on water. The wall may have kept out invaders, storm water or curious locals, while the tower watched the lake and sky. Whatever it guarded, the stones still stand where human fear and pride once met the danger of open water.
