Bawn in Canbo

Bawn

What is recorded here

Canbo castle and bawn stood fair in County Roscommon during the mid-17th century, yet no visible trace remains today. The earth may have swallowed the stones or people may have scattered them across neighboring fields. Whatever vanished, the bawn once shaped local life and identity before disappearing without a mark.
Canbo castle was described in the mid-17th century as `.... a fair Castle Bawn and stone house standeth' (Simington 1949, 165), but no visible surface trace of a bawn survives. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
