Ballyknock still hides an old broken bawn recorded in 1640 under Redmond Magrath of Thurlesbegg. Its walls may have failed before the survey, yet the name remained because the place still mattered. Perhaps a yard, a gate or a farm circle once stood there, now lost beneath grass and memory.

According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) in 1640 in 'Ballyknock' there was 'an old Broken Bawne at prsent Wast' under the proprietorship of 'Redmond Magrath of Thurlesbegg Esqr.
