Bawn in Ballyhist, Gormanstown and Garryroe was a walled castle yard belonging to Thomas Butler in 1640, now vanished from the three townlands. The Civil Survey recorded its walls and bawn, but no one has found them since. The land may still hide the castle under grass, hedges or forgotten fields, waiting for someone to walk it without a map.

According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) in 'Gormanstowne' in 1640, 'Upon the sd lands stands the walls of a Castle with a Bawne about it' under the proprietorship of 'Thomas Butler of Gormanstowne Gent. Irish Papist' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 336). The castle (TS087-035001-) and bawn are unlocated within the three townlands of Ballyhist, Garryroe and Gormanstown. Thomas Butler, an Irish Papist gentleman, held the castle at Bawn in Gormanstown around 1640. It is remembered as a site noted in the Civil Survey, reflecting the presence of a Butler family estate during the turbulent period of Confederate Ireland.
