Battle of Ballynahinch

Four thousand United Irishmen gathered at Ballynahinch in June 1798, electing Henry Munro as their leader after capturing Newtownards. George Nugent struck back with two thousand government troops and heavy artillery, bombarding the rebel camp at Montalto until demoralised fighters slipped away into the dark. The next day Munro attacked Ballynahinch but was driven back, suffering hundreds of casualties while Nugent lost only forty men.
