Bass Rock, Castle

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Bass Rock, Castle as Castle (medieval), Prison (17th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The Bass Rock Castle was built in the 13th century, likely by the de Balliol family, and later held by the Douglas family in the 14th century. It is important as a strategic stronghold in the Firth of Forth and was later used as a prison in the 17th century, including for the notorious pirate Captain William Kidd.
