What is recorded here

One clear fact is that Mota Baile Pilip is a mound in County Louth. Local tradition says it was levelled in 1891, and that a stone coffin, a skeleton and a sword came out of it. The mound may have marked a fierce or beloved person, but the name and event preserve more than measurement: they keep the surprise of discovery alive.

In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
