Barrow

In reclaimed pastureland on the summit of Knockcarragh Hill. Hachured on the 1916 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Classified as enclosure in the RMP (1996). Described by Westropp (1913, 258) as ‘a conspicuous little tumulus’. A grass-covered subcircular flat-topped mound (basal dims. 13m E-W; 11.3m N-S; H 1.4-2.2m) constructed of earth and large stones (dims. L c. 0.3m; L 0.3m). Its top (8m N-S; 5.7m E-W) slopes to the S and is covered with overgrown field-clearance stones. A drystone field wall crossing it from NW to SSE was built by the Land Commission during the 1920s, according to local information. The N edge of the mound has been straightened and is aligned NE-SW.
