Barrow

On undulating ground in pasture, with boggy land to the N and S and wide views especially W-N. Hachured on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. This circular ring-barrow (diam. 20.5m) is defined by a shallow fosse (av. Wth 2m) and an outer bank (Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.35-0.75m; ext. H 0.2-0.95m), the inner face of which has eroded away at the SE. The central mound (diam. 9.5m; H over fosse 0.45-0.6m) is dome-shaped, with a shallow depression in the middle. There is another ring-barrow (CL008-065----) c. 88m to the NE. A Neolithic ring-barrow, dating to approximately 3000–2500 BCE, representing an early form of burial monument associated with the construction of earthwork enclosures and fosse systems. Its presence indicates prehistoric settlement and ritual activity in the region.
