What is recorded here

Barrow is a vanished ditch circle in County Limerick, last seen clearly in 2005 and absent from later satellite images. It lay fifty metres from the Dromkeen boundary, with Gortavalley Fort watching from beyond. Grass, rain or forgotten work may have erased it; the land keeps its own ledgers and rewrites them without warning.

In pasture 50m E of the townland boundary with Dromkeen. The ringfort (LI024-002----) known as ‘Gortavalley Fort’ lies 110m to NNE. The enclosure is not depicted on historic OSi maps. It is visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 as a circular enclosure surrounded by a fosse (ext. diam. c. 12m). It is not visible on the Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 49; AP 4/3717) as a U-shaped enclosure. The site is not visible on the most recent Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018. A ditch barrow, likely dating to the Early Bronze Age. Its presence indicates a local funerary tradition and may be associated with early metalworking or agrarian communities in the region.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
