Barnhill Rock Garden

Barnhill Rock Garden beside Broughty Ferry’s shore has turned old volcanic rock and former golf ground into a small riot of plants, ponds and sea air. Look across the Tay, then inspect an alpine flower at your feet. Dundee City Council says the site formed part of a nine-hole golf course completed in 1896, after the railway arrived. The rock garden began in 1955 when a stretch of old shoreline rock was cleared. It grew east over former sand dunes, with stone brought from Carmylie Quarry to help shape the planting areas. That is an impressive change of sport: the old fairway now rewards people who stop rather than swing. The garden’s lower ponds were made in 1982 and its upper ponds in 1985. They draw attention to a site where five natural springs once appeared, though most later dried up. Plants have come from the Scottish Rock Garden Club, Dundee Botanic Gardens and the work of local Friends, who raise new plants and tend borders. Look for the different textures: rocky beds, shrubs, flowers and water each get a turn, while the River Tay provides a broad backdrop without demanding admission. The council says Barnhill Rock Garden is free and open to the public at all times. Seats and picnic tables make lingering easy, with toilets nearby and the shore path close at hand. Check the council’s map for routes and remember that the glasshouse and toilets may have shorter hours than the outdoor garden. Come for a short walk and expect the plants to delay you; Barnhill has made a hobby of turning five minutes into an afternoon.
