Banagher Tower stands in County Galway as a Martello tower, built to watch the coast and deter invasion. Its round stone body still points toward the water, waiting for ships that never came. The chamber may have held a keeper, a gun, or only the wind. What is certain is that the tower survived the panic which birthed it, turning a weapon into a landmark.
