Mnemo records an old castle stump and empty thatched houses in Ballynacree, yet no visible castle remains identified there today. The named house is from the nineteenth century, leaving the older structure hidden beneath grass, memory or mistake. What is certain is that the place was already abandoned when described, and what is lost is the shape of the rooms that stood before they disappeared.

The Civil Survey (1654-6) describes 'an old stumpe of a castle & som thatcht houses not inhabited', in the townland of Clogh Iready (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 63). The castle was provisionally located to Ballynacree House as it is the townland house, however, it is a 19th-century house with no evidence of any early fabric. Ballynacree House is associated with the remains of a medieval castle mentioned in the 1654–56 Civil Survey, indicating its presence at least by the 17th century. It is remembered as a historical site linked to early settlement and fortification in the region.
