Ballycotton Island holds a black granite tower that first cut the dark in 1851 after ships broke apart on the hidden rocks below. Its lower panes glow red when a vessel drifts too close, turning warning into colour rather than distance. The tower still stands east of Ballycotton, small and stubborn against the sea, marking the place where water stopped being optional.
