Ballinoroher Castle guarded the only river ford between Bandon and the southwest, a narrow chokepoint where the Argideen River cut through Cork countryside. Donal MacCarthy of Kildee held it in 1611, likely inheriting a fortress his Sliocht Inghine Ui Chruimin kin had raised decades earlier to tax or stop every cart, horse and soldier crossing that water. When Cromwellian troops advanced in the mid-17th century, local tradition claims the family hid gold inside a wall compartment or a tunnel running south toward an old fort, but no one has opened that hiding place since. The ruined walls still stand beside the river, quiet enough that you can imagine hands pressing coins into wet plaster while boots echoed in the distance.
