Ballinamona House stands on a slight east-facing slope in County Waterford, its basement holding a six-metre wall with a battered base that may belong to a castle built in 1488. The 18th-century house was rebuilt after a fire in 1894, yet the older wall remains buried beneath domestic comfort. Perhaps the castle never fell so much as it was swallowed, its defence redirected into the walls of a home that still faces the sunrise.
