Ballaghmore Castle is a five-storey late medieval tower house in County Laois, built around the fifteenth century for the Fitzpatricks of Ossory near the ancient Slighe Dala road. Cromwellian forces captured and partly dismantled it in 1647, yet the castle survived, was restored in the nineteenth century, and still shows its murder hole, spiral stairs, narrow loops and close defensive bawn wall. Its most unexpected feature is a sheela-na-gig carved on the southwest wall, reminding visitors that this fortress was also a lived-in home where belief, fear and daily life became stone.
