Balgavies Castle was razed to its foundations by James VI in 1593 after the defeat of Argyll, leaving behind two barrel vaults sunk below the ground on a natural knoll in Angus. The vaults still hold their shape, 8 by 6 metres across, with walls thick enough to bear a small window and a faint curving fragment that may have been a round tower. What was lost is easy to imagine: a moat around the knoll, a tower at the corner, and the life that filled the rooms before the king's men broke them open.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Balgavies Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Balgavies Castle was a medieval stronghold, likely built in the 14th or 15th century, and is remembered as part of the historic landscape of Perth and Kinross in Scotland. Its remains are significant for understanding regional castle architecture and feudal landholding in central Scotland.
