Ayscoughfee Hall Museum

Ayscoughfee Hall in Spalding has been changing its outfit for more than five centuries and somehow still knows who it is. Its medieval timber, Georgian ceiling and Gothic-flavoured Victorian front lead into a town museum, with gardens outside large enough to tempt me away before I have finished the rooms. South Holland District Council dates parts of the house to about 1450 using the original roof timbers. It was mainly a family home from the fifteenth century until 1902, with the Johnson family resident for more than two centuries. Later it sheltered Belgian refugees during the First World War and served as a library, school and council offices. Now the hall tells Spalding's story through its building and museum displays. If houses kept diaries, this one would need several shelves. I suspect the Georgian ceiling and Victorian frontage still argue over who made the better first impression; that argument is entirely mine. The real layers are wonderfully clear if you look for them, and the gardens give another view of what successive owners wanted from the place. The hall is neither frozen in its first century nor pretending its later uses never happened. The public museum sits in gardens that the council also opens for visits. Some old rooms have steps or other limits, with alternative information available, so check its current access guide if needed. Go upstairs where you can, then return outside and look at the changing face of the house. It has earned every wrinkle.

This does not grant access. Check current paths, opening conditions and ownership before entering.
