What is recorded here

Attavally Island is a crannog in County Mayo, Ireland. It is an artificial island, likely built of stone, soil or waste material, where people lived above the water rather than beside it. The lake or bog would have controlled the approach, marked the boundary of the household and carried away heat, smell and danger. To walk there is to enter a small made world, not a forgotten rock.
