Assumpta House

End-of-terrace two-bay three-storey cut limestone house, built c. 1900. Now in use by the Legion of Mary. Integral carriage arch flanked by doorways, blocked-up c. 1950. Modern flat-roofed extension to rear c. 1990. One of a group of nine but wider than remainder of terrace to east. Pitched slate roof, rendered chimneystack with clay pots, clay ridge tiles, brick eaves course, extruded aluminium gutters, uPVC downpipe to west. Coursed squared limestone masonry walls to upper floors with painted red brick dressings, entire ground floor in painted brick. Square-headed window openings, painted stone sills, one-over-one painted timber sash windows to first and second floor, painted timber casement window set in, blocked-up, segmental arch to ground floor. Square-headed door openings, painted flush doors, c. 1990 with plain overlights above. Street fronted.

This house is one of a planned group of nine forming a terrace on a busy street. The house, which is larger than the remainder of the terrace, is well proportioned and retains some original features. The painted red brick dressings and limestone masonry walls contrast, adding textural interest. The house is of particular interest as it incorporates the original carriage opening that would have been used to access the rear of the terrace.
