Ashwell Springs

Nature reserve

Explorer Tom

Ashwell Springs bubbles out of the chalk just below the village High Street, then starts a watery journey that becomes the River Rhee and part of the Cam. Drop down into the wooded hollow and listen before you look; I would announce the river's departure, but the springs seem to prefer a quieter send-off. The spring pools are small, yet Ashwell Parish Council identifies them as a protected biological site important for cold-water life. Rare flatworms thrive in the cool water, while grass and trees shade the pools. A village walk describes steps from the High Street to the springhead and stepping stones across the flow. This is the public Ashwell Springs in the village, not Ashwell Quarry and Quarry Springs to the west, where the wildlife trust requires a permit. Similar names should not send anyone through the wrong gate. I suspect the first drop of water carries a tiny map to Cambridge and laughs at the rest for following. That is my invention; the real surprise is how much river begins in such a tucked-away place. Stand still long enough to notice the water emerging, gathering and leaving. The clear flow is more interesting than any grand sign declaring that a river starts here. The parish gives access from High Street and a footpath from Hodwell. Keep to the public route, take care on steps or wet stones, and leave the spring pools undisturbed; their cold-water animals depend on a healthy habitat. Do not confuse this easy village visit with permission to enter the separate quarry reserve. Let the Rhee do the travelling while you enjoy its first few metres.

This does not grant access. Check current paths, opening conditions and ownership before entering.
