Built by Henry VIII in the 1540s as part of his coastal defense network, Walmer Castle was one of several artillery castles constructed to protect England from French and Spanish invasion. It is remembered for its strategic role in the defense of the southeastern coast and for its association with the long-standing presence of the Earls of Radnor.
