No castle wall or gate remains at Sheastown, but a Shee armorial plaque set in the stable wall of Sheastown Lodge still bears the name of Richard Shee of Kilkenny, Esquire, dated 1582. The lost castle may have stood nearby above the river, remembered only through this much-travelled stone and the shape of the land.

According to Manning (2012, 144) the ‘castle [KK024-118----] at Sheastown was in good repair in the mid-1650s, as recorded in the Civil Survey . . ., though no trace of it survives today apart from a Shee armorial plaque dated 1582 in the wall of the stables of Sheastown Lodge. The inscription on the plaque reads: 'Insignia Richardi Shee Kilkeniens armigeri 1582' ('The arms of Richard Shee of Kilkenny, Esquire, 1582'). The castle may have been on the site of or close to the old Sheastown House [KK024-125----] (Robertson 1851, unnumbered plate), which was demolished in the late nineteenth century.
