Armorial plaque (present location) in Greenmount

The original location of this plaque is unknown. It is currently positioned in the apex of an carriage arch to the yard of Kenilworth House which was built c. 1800. The heraldic shield in the centre of the plaque bears the coat of arms of the Butlers of Dunboyne. The crescent at the centre of the quarters indicates a second son, or a decendant of a second son, though Burke's Peerage has no suitable candidate (pers. comm. Gerard Crotty). It is dated 1644 and bears the initials TB and KB. A latin inscription at the base of the plaque reads: IGNEM SUI AMORIS ACCENDAT DEUS IN CORDIBUS NOSTRIS AMEN which translates as: Let God kindle the fire of his love in our hearts Amen. This prayer is associated with Pentecost. The top of the plaque has a carved ogee within which there is an HIS inscription. The apex of the ogee terminates with a rolled scroll on either side. It is possible that the plaque was originally located at 'Carigateiry Castle' (TS088-080----). This castle is depicted in the Down Survey map (1655-58) of the Barony of Glenahiry in County Waterford where it is shown as being in the vicinity of Kenilworth House in Greenmount townland or south of this in Garrancasey townland.
