Fitzwilliam Hall bears a small armoral plaque rescued from the old coach house, marking the site where Merrion Castle stood before St. Mary's Home for the Blind took it over. The Fitzwilliam family called that place home from the 15th-century, and their coat of arms still shows on the south gable like a forgotten claimant returning to the door.

St. Mary's Home for the Blind is built on the site of Merrion Castle, the ancestral home of the Fitzwilliam family since the 15th-century. Within the present building complex, a plaque with the Fitzwilliam Coat of Arms has been built into the S gable of a new building called 'Fitzwilliam Hall' on the site of the coach house which had contained this plaque (L 0.33m; Wth 0.44m).
