Elizabeth I’s coat of arms still stares from a re-set wall beside Castleforbes, though the late medieval castle that likely birthed the plaque has vanished. The stone survived destruction, displacement and reuse, carrying royal authority through layers of forgetting. It is not a museum display but a rescued fragment, forcing the new house to share its wall with a dead kingdom.

This armorial plaque has been re-set into the wall at the N end of the W range of buildings in the courtyard to the NW of the19th-century house ‘Castle Forbes’. The plaque bears the coat of arms of Elizabeth I, Queen of England (1558-1603) (Casey and Rowan 1993, 192). Its original provenance is unknown but it is very likely to have come from the late medieval castle (LF008-012001-). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 13 June 2013
