Armorial plaque in Castleforbes Demesne

Armorial plaque

What is recorded here

Three muzzled bear heads and a rampant griffon stare down the gateway of Castle Forbes, preserving the initials of Sir Arthur Forbes and Janet Lauder. The plaque survived the loss of the original 17th-century house to be re-set above a later battlemented entrance, carrying their identity across centuries of change.
This armorial plaque has been re-set in the wall over the battlemented gateway, which lies to the W of the 19th-century house ‘Castle Forbes’. The plaque, which probably came from the original 17th-century house (LF008-012----), depicts three muzzled bear heads, a rampant griffon and the initials AF and IL. The initials commemorate the original grantee and builder, Sir Arthur Forbes (died 1632) and his wife, Janet Lauder (died post September 1642) (Casey and Rowan 1993, 190).
