Armorial plaque in Burgagery-Lands West

Formerly located on the main, W-facing, facade of the Main Guard (TS083-019004-) which was built by James Butler, first Duke of Ormond, between 1673 and 1684 as a prestigious courthouse for the Palatinate of County Tipperary. This is one of two sandstone armorial plaques (see also TS083-019099-) positioned at first-floor level. This, the more southerly plaque, bears the arms of the Borough of Clonmel within a much damaged moulded sandstone surround. During the restoration of the building to its former 17th-century appearance the surrounds were repaired, however, the plaques have been brought inside the courthouse to prevent further weathering.
